WILL AMAZON CHANGE THE SELF-PUBLISHING WORLD?
Many writers and small publishers seem to be panicking because of
Amazon's decision to use solely POD books from their BookSurge. "A
monopoly!" "Unfair!" many exclaim.
However, like with any change can this be used to open new
opportunities for publishing, distribution, and marketing? The world
doesn't remain static, so we must adapt to change and find new
opportunities.
Makes sense to me. Save the trees and all that.
But anyway, this is the second time in twenty-four hours I've read about Booksurge. The first was in a letter from my father. He sent me my cousin's book that "got published" and "I bought you a copy from Amazon so we could show our support."
Sure thing, Dad. I'm all for that. It could have been on just about any subject under the sun, and I would have shelled out the $18, cause, yanno…family. But as luck would have it, it's a genre I would have actually, probably, maybe have purchased for myself, family or no. Win-win, right?
So last night I jump into bed and start reading. Four pages in, I end up flipping back to the front of the book wondering what publisher in their right mind would have put their name behind such a poorly edited final product. The first chapter alone had five punctuation and grammar errors.
The answer is, no publisher. Because he used Booksurge to self-publish. More power to him, I suppose. Especially as the letter from my dad included an email from my cousin lamenting about the many years he'd been writing, revising, and editing his book, and seeing it in print is a dream come true.
I don't know if Booksurge will change the publishing world, but it sure as hell gave me a start. I've been reading online for years, and believe me, I've seen poorly edited fiction. I've written some too. But for some reason that I can't quite put my finger on, seeing it printed, bound, and dressed up with pretty cover art was profoundly disturbing.
